Greg Natale‘s Mosvman II is a masterful blend of minimalist decor and material richness, as one can easily tell from the moment you first lay eyes on this home. Stepping into the living room, one is immediately left in awe by the amazing use of minimalist decor to make the room feel clean, sophisticated, and aesthetically fulfilling. The living room is also defined by its usage of neutral tones, namely grey, blue, white, and black, as well as simple shapes and lines, which are a key element that is typical in minimalist decor. The geometric rug in the center of the living room is incredibly simple, yet it blends in beautifully with the room’s main themes, using its simple lines and shapes to its advantage, along with its use of directly contrasting colors, such as black, white, orange, and blue. The furniture itself complements the rug’s colors and themes, making the whole room feel harmonious and well-balanced. The hallway keeps up with the same color palettes as before, adding a touch of glamour to this home by using a few art pieces paired with the same type of minimalist decor we have seen before. The hallway leads to this bedroom, which matches the home’s overall feeling of minimalist luxury, although the bedroom has a unique, individual charm that no other room in this house has, and an endearing sense of relaxation and tranquility that is enough to soothe anyone when they first lay eyes on it. The rug is much simpler than the other one we saw in the living room, as this one only has a simple pattern, with a large blue oval, in the same shade as the blue furniture in the living room. These other bedrooms, on the other hand, chose a completely different approach when it came to designing, opting for a more pastel colored palette, investing in more uncommon colors, such as purple, soft pink, and beige. The choice in rugs also differs a lot from what we have seen so far, meaning that there truly was a change in the way minimalist decor was used for these rooms, from a simpler aesthetic to a much more refined and sophisticated one. The geometric rugs that are underneath the bed are a beautiful example of how an effective use of different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures can easily make a room feel much more dynamic and endearing. That all being said, these two bedrooms are still using mainly minimalist decor and styles to design the room, making it a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the home, which has a tendency to still use more typical uses of the minimalist style. The bathroom is an exemplary continuation of the splendid usage of minimalist decor by the interior designer, Greg Natale, who has been including elements of this style all over the home, all to make this home bring out the emotions of relaxation and livelihood he wanted to focus on. Here, Natale chose to invest in a more black and white, contrasting theme, with a few hints of beige thrown into the mix to create a bit more of a bold mixture of colors. Dive into Noz Nozawa’s project in this iconic Rousseau-style San Francisco home, giving it a fresh new personality using patterned rugs. Interior Designer, Noz Nozawa, has always had a special fascination for the iconic, breathtaking Rousseau-style homes that are typical of the San Francisco region. Nozawa has wanted for a long time to reimagine someone else’s Rousseau-style home, so when her long-time clients decided to purchase one, she finally had the opportunity to make her wish come true. Nozawa’s creative process when it came to reimagining this home ended up shifting her focus to using more colors and patterns in the rooms, which is where her usage of patterned rugs became an essential part of her work in this project. Starting off our overview with the family room, we can clearly see that the goal was to make a fun, yet comfortable room, where adults and kids alike can have fun or just sit down and relax for a bit. This is made clear by the usage of fun decor elements such as the star-shaped pillow, animal blanket, but the usage of one of the home’s patterned rugs also plays a very big part in making the room feel unique and lively. A hint of sophistication can also be denoted in the room, mostly from the minimalist puffs and sofa, but also through the simple, yet abstract painting that is hung on the wall. Moving on to the bedroom, Nozawa chose to make a much more sophisticated approach in her choice of furniture and decor, which is also shown in her choice of the rug, which is much different from the rest of the patterned rugs in this home. The choice of neutral tones and minimalist furniture helps this bedroom feel like a relaxing, elegant, and soothing place where you can relax and read a book unbothered by worries from everyday life. Although this room’s aesthetic differs a lot from the rest of the home, it still maintains Nozawa’s masterful use of patterned rugs to create a dynamic and truly elegant environment. As for the living room, Nozawa chose to incorporate a much more contrasting color scheme, one where cold and warm colors can coexist to bring to life a truly unique room, meant for educated relaxation and socialization. The usage of patterned rugs is still very present in this room, and this one in particular creates visual contrast in its choice of colors, as well as in its choice of different overlapping patterns, which all contribute to the room’s ambience. Nozawa wanted this living room to incorporate the main themes that this home has had up until now, namely the unique sense of subtle, yet elegant sophistication that engulfs the entire home, which she decided to capture through the usage of contemporary furniture with a few twists, namely in terms of patterns, colors, and shapes. “These clients and I are willing to shake things up and be freer. Now we’ve created something bespoke to them, and it’s brought real joy to the family.” Noz Nozawa- Interior Designer Unlike the other patterned rugs, which chose simpler patterns and colors, this rug in the nursery is made to make this place as kid-friendly as possible, which resulted in this softly colored rug, with soft patterns that remind us of nature’s sweet embrace. The rest of the furniture that we have in the room is extremely simple and minimalistic, which aids in the creation of the whole soothing yet fun ambience that Onzama was striving for, and also makes the whole room much more functional. Much similarly to the other rooms, Onzama chose to use themed decorations; in this case, she used animal-shaped toys and plushies, which she hung on the wall and placed around the room, making the room feel cute and safe, which is perfect for the client’s children. Not all rooms have to follow the same color palette as the other ones, as we can see in this room, where warmer tones, such as pink and red, are being used to further bring out a sense of warmth. This room chose to use a contrasting black and white rug to help bring a unique twist to this otherwise very minimalist room, pairing neatly with the smooth shapes and colors seen on the furniture. This is a very common case in contemporary chic decor, since this style likes to combine newer design styles with more sophisticated, classic ones, resulting in extremely unique rooms such as this one, which are full of personality. As for the bedroom, we are once again shifting to warmer, more expressive tones that help bring out that more classical feel that our contemporary chic decor has been hinting towards throughout the house. On top of the bed lies a clear, white blanket that pairs with the pillow and the grey headboard, as well as the light-brown bedside table and decor. Overall, these give this bedroom plenty of personality and liveliness, which is something that, although it is very present throughout the home, also helps make the bedroom feel like a relaxing escape from all the stress and pressure from modern life. In other words, the contemporary chic decor makes this room feel like a safe haven, an escape from all of our troubles. The dining room is possibly one of the most unique rooms in this entire home, and a lot of that is due to its spectacular usage of wallpapers and rugs to decorate and give the room a classical, almost Victorian-like look. Contemporary chic decor is mostly present in its more classical part in this room, but is also very noticeable in the dining table’s and chair’s neutral colors and smooth shapes. It’s truly one of, if not the most sophisticated, rooms in the entire home, all thanks to this unique approach to decoration. Once a boring, cold, and visually unappealing building, it has become the beacon of bold, yet calming design it is now, thanks to Alexandra Kidd Interior Design’s efforts. Skyline Reverie, the name of this penthouse, began with the goal of emanating warmth and luxury through its splendid usage of earthy tones, bold shapes, and peculiar pieces of furniture and decor throughout the penthouse. This living room is a prime example of how all these elements were used to make the apartment feel more welcoming and cozy, somewhere where they can feel truly at home, with a hint of luxury added into the mix. The masterful choice of colors for the rugs and furniture made it so that the earthy tones stood out even more, bringing the whole warm, inviting feeling they were going for even more present in the living room. Along with the mesmerizing view of the Sydney Harbour, the usage of soft, contrasting whites in the walls, floor, and pillars, combined with the earthy tones present in the remainder of the room, brings out a slight hint of an almost vacational feel to the home, along with the tables and chairs on the balcony. The clients had two very different tastes, as one of them preferred bold colors and expressive textures, and the other one wanted a more calm, serene ambience surrounding the apartment, which resulted in a beautiful amalgamation of different styles that ended up pleasing both sides. A quiet sense of luxury is drawn out by the smooth marble in the kitchen, providing a small contrast to the surrounding earthy tones. The office is meant to be a much more formal and serious space, but that didn’t stop the team from giving it their all to make this office as cozy as the rest of the apartment. They maintained the same philosophy when it came to the earthy tones and minimalist furniture, making an effort to decorate the room using the shelves and the shaped rug below the table. Even though the same earthy tones used above are still dominant, there is also a noticeable effort in order to make the office feel different from the rest of the apartment, by using slightly different colors, such as the light yellow on the rug and the dark green in the puff, keeping this room fresh and distinct from the others. As for the bedroom, the same spectacular view of Sydney Harbour as the one on the balcony is available, reminding us once more of the luxurious privilege that is to being able to gaze off into this wonderful sight in the comfort of your own home. The walls and furniture keep the same earthy tones we have seen before, leaning into a beautiful contrast between the bedroom and the bathroom, which is unlike the other rooms we have seen so far, almost completely white. As opposed to the rest of the apartment, earthy tones aren’t very present in this room, making its focus shift to being a more neutral, minimalist room, lacking complex decorative elements and colors. Clad entirely in richly grained wood panels, the room exudes a sense of warmth and gravitas. At the heart of the space sits a sculptural desk, its glass top appearing to float above a dark wooden base.    The decor is intentionally minimalist, allowing each element to stand out. A runner-style patterned rug wraps each step, creating a rhythmic sense of movement. Explore this stylish home in Istanbul, and see how interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch proves the importance of a well-placed minimalist rug. Pierre Yovanovitch says that there is an almost Venetian feel to this home in Bosphorus, Istanbul, due to the way it “sits” on water, the way the light reflects the water into the walls, to the way the windows give up a spectacular view of the city. The Bosphorus is not tidal, so the water level is always very near the level of the garden, making it feel a bit like an agitated lake. It is always very busy with both local traffic and large cargo vessels transiting between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. It is a mesmerizing view.” -Pierre Yovanovitch The client, a young bachelor whose parents live nearby, had this house built for him on the site of a 1960s apartment building, and wanted something modern like most of his neighbours’ homes. Yovanovitch’s job was only to create a contemporary, lively space that would fit his client’s youthful lifestyle, with lots of room for house parties and inviting his friends over, but that would transition into a family home as he grew older. Starting with the living room, Yovanovitch placed a minimalist rug in the center of the room, immediately bringing out a more relaxing and welcoming feel to the room, making it somewhere the client’s guests can sit down and socialize while gazing upon the room’s wonderful decor. A minimalist rug like the one in this room was placed in order to bring out the white furniture and walls, while maintaining the room’s color palette neutral and balanced, as it is typical in modern interior design. The living room’s decor and furniture are pretty simple and sleek, which makes the usage of a simple, yet minimalist rug, as the one we see here, with clean patterns and neutral colors, a very wise choice from Yovanovitch, since it makes it stand out in a way that isn’t very loud or “attention seeking.” In the office, the minimalist rug covers most of the room, engulfing it in all of its beige warmth, contrasting ever so slightly with the darker-toned table and chairs, making this a more sophisticated room than the others. It truly isn’t meant to be only a workspace, but also a room where the client can relax and gaze upon the city and the sea, or into the beautiful decor in the room, such as the painting on the wall. The minimalist rug makes the sophisticated, yet luxurious feel of this room much easier to perceive, since it isn’t there only to create contrast and complement the furniture, it’s also there to soothe and relax you in a room, that is much more naturally imposing than the others, it reminds you that you’re still safe and comfortable. In the fireplace, the decoration is much different, emanating a much warmer feeling, making it a perfect place to sit down, relax, and read a book by the warmth of the fireplace. The minimalist rug further brings out this feeling of coziness, as it is, much like the other rooms, in a neutral, cream color, although it has a bit more of a geometrical texture, which almost makes this room feel a bit rustic. The furniture in this room really brings out the more contemporary feel that Yovanovitch was striving for, which gave him a bit more creative freedom when choosing a minimalist rug, resulting in him choosing a pretty bold option that somehow still felt cozy and a part of the room’s main theme. In the primary bedroom, modern minimalism is the main theme, with white walls and neutral themes being the main focus, with a phenomenal painting depicting a forest hanging on the wall. The minimalist rug is once again in the centralized area of the room, bringing out an emphasis on the furniture, while in the meantime making the room feel simple and welcoming. As it’s meant to be a place to rest and relax, comfort was one of Yovanovitch’s main focuses in this room, as we can tell through all of the elements he chose, but also somewhere practical and modern, where there isn’t a lot of furniture to get in your way. Art is also something Yovanovitch wanted to include all over the house, whether it’s via the usage of paintings, sculptures, and other pieces of decor, since the client and his family are big art collectors. Creating a welcoming environment using neutral rugs With modern life leading us more and more times away from nature and into the big, polluted cities, it becomes essential to challenge this tendency and try to lead our lives as close to nature as we can. And with that in mind, the interior designer Brian Paquette made this home in Washington a perfect retreat from modern life’s stress, turning it into a safe haven that’s actively connected with nature, and transmits a feeling of warmth and comfort. “I have dreamt of designing a residence like this and have been preparing for it for years.” -Brian Paquette A great example of how Paquette achieves these cozy, welcoming feelings is through his masterful usage of neutral rugs and other simplistic, yet inviting pieces of decor. Connecting with nature using minimalism The original architecture was made in 2004, with a minimalistic format that uses glass, steel, concrete, and wood for the building, which Paquette still maintained in this project, choosing to decorate, renovate, and place new pieces of furniture with that minimalist feeling in mind. Everything, from the sofas to the vases on top of the table and the neutral rugs on the floor, makes us drift into the beautiful view of the forest that surrounds this home, leading us into a state of utter relaxation, without a worry in the world, we are in peace. In the living room, the usage of neutral rugs is done in a subtle, minimalist manner, which further brings out the furniture and decor in the room, which also makes use of neutral colors and minimalistic elements. A Harmony between sophistication and simplicity The kitchen and the dining room feature earthy tones that we will see in other parts of this home, which further bring out the welcoming yet natural environment that Paquette was going for when designing the decor for this home. In the kitchen, Paquette uses smooth, clean surfaces to transmit a sense of a more sophisticated lifestyle, which is not something that is the focus for most of the other rooms in the house, which are primarily focusing on comfort and enforcing a sense of connection with nature. The dining room, however, is much more aligned with the warm, cozy emotions that we have been discussing since the beginning, which are being drawn out by the beige rug, that although is much more brighter than the other neutral rugs we’ve seen so far, still serves the same purpose as the other ones. A quiet escape from everyday life In the office, once again, the minimalistic inspirations from the original home are once again taking form in Paquette’s work, through the usage of simple shapes in the furniture, neutral rugs, and neutral colors all around the room. The neutral rugs we have seen so far were normally very subtle; however, in this room, the rug stands out a bit more than the other since its color chimes a bit with the brown tables, making it stand out a bit more. This, however, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t complete its purpose of providing a welcoming, warm feel to the room, as this room does feel very charming, almost as if it is inviting you to sit down and read a book while occasionally gazing into the nearby forest. It’s truly meant to be an out-of-the-ordinary way of working, where relaxation and work can blend in harmoniously with a mix of nature and modernity thrown into the room simultaneously, a place that is simple, yet sophisticated and warm. Relaxing in an aesthetic haven The media room is a room that is dedicated to a bit of a more luxurious way of relaxing, and the darker color palette, along with the usage of abstract art pieces, and a dark gray rug, unlike the other neutral rugs we have seen yet, help make the room feel more like an intellectual art piece. The furniture is simple and chosen in a way that maximizes comfort without sacrificing practicality, which is a staple of the minimalist design style. Dive into Hugo Toro’s breathtaking work on the first Orient Express Hotel in Rome, using art deco rugs in this 17th-century noble residence. In the heart of the Eternal City, the Orient Express La Minerva Hotel immediately catches visitors’ and residents’ attention alike, due to its unique location in the famous Piazza della Minerva, just steps away from the Colosseum, but also due to the passage of the iconic Orient Express train service, a Belle Époque train route popularized by Agatha Christie. When tasked to bring this incredibly ambitious project to life, the interior designer, Hugo Toro, used various different styles of decor and furniture to make sure the hotel felt like an amazing maximalist haven, full of breathtaking elements and themes. “Rome for me is plaster, roughness, and a sometimes Brutalist aesthetic, but framed with stone and ornament”, said Toro, after spending 15 days living the essence of the Italian capital by himself. “Something that really touched me was the idea of stratification.” Immediately in the entryway, we can already see the sophistication emanating from everywhere in the room, which is a feeling that is being further enhanced by the art deco rugs all over the lobby entrance, ensuring that the first impression of this hotel leaves an everlasting impression on whoever is visiting. In the lobby entrance, we can see the art deco rugs feature repetitive, symmetrical shapes, which are typical of this design style, although there are other homages to the art deco style, such as a carved-travertine bar, which further brings out the sense of sophisticated luxury the hotel is striving for. In order to live up to Rome’s high reputation when it comes to luxury and sophistication, Toro used art deco rugs to complement the overall maximalist feel of the hotel, pairing with typical Roman elements, such as the original pillars, from the time of the original 17th-century noble residence and the statue of the goddess of wisdom, Minerva. “I think in a past life I was living here.” -Hugo Toru Beyond the lobby, Toru continued to use the same design philosophy he had been using for the rest of the hotel, so he continued using art deco rugs and other contemporary elements in the other rooms and suites, to keep the luxurious feeling of the hotel present everywhere, at every time. As for the rooms and suites, Toru wanted to incorporate the very essence of Italian art de vivre, embodying a design identity that appropriates Art Deco codes while remaining rooted in Roman architecture, highlighted by its raw, matt finish and contemporary elements. Art deco rugs are still a big deal for these rooms, although they are in a much different fashion than the ones we saw in the lobby; these ones are much more simplistic, focusing much more on streamlined forms and aerodynamic curves that make them highlight the smooth, neutral colors that we see throughout the room. The shape of the furniture also follows the overall smooth shape of the art deco rugs, with a few exceptions, such as the center table and the geometrical panels on the painting, which serve as a small contrast to the overall smoothness of the room. This room here is the Obelico suite, a unique, privileged suite with a view of the iconic Bernini’s elephant in Minerva Square, and it is also well decorated with art deco rugs, contemporary elements, and busts that remind us of Ancient Rome. It’s truly meant to be somewhere you can relax with a truly exquisite to one of Rome’s many famous attractions, making this room feel like a truly luxurious, one of a time experience to be in this suite. “La Minerva is a secret spot where you can admire the wonders of Rome, from the Pantheon to the Quirinal Palace, from its panoramic terrace.” -Hugo Tora Tora made sure all of the 93 different rooms and suites emanated the same Italian art de vivre feel he was striving for, and even though not all rooms include art deco rugs, they still give you that feeling he was trying to achieve. Hugo Tora serves as a true inspiration to anyone who wants to venture into the world of interior design with challenging yet rewarding projects, which require us to use our creativity and knowledge to our advantage. Let’s take a look at how interior designer Peti Lau gave this midcentury home a brand new look by mixing influences, patterns, colors, and modern rugs. Coming from a line of creatives and designers, as this home’s previous owners, this house was sure to evoke an emotional awakening to the creative couple, Maisie Culver and David Imai. Even though they loved the house and were completely charmed by its uniqueness, they felt it needed a breath of fresh air to bring it back to its prime, and so they called interior designer Peti Lau to aid them in this project. By using modern rugs such as the one we saw, as well as other elements, Lau managed to combine clean lines with color and create a contrast with a few callbacks to the Hollywood Regency style. Modern rugs usually don’t use very vibrant colors, which makes them perfect for a project that requires softer, more cream color palettes. The lines in the rug also make for a good contrast when compared with the oval shape of the sofa and some of the other elements in the room, like the round lamps, the record player, and even some of the shapes present in the painting. Most of the modern rugs we’ll see throughout this project use relatively simple shapes and colors, since their purpose isn’t to really be the focus of the project, but to contrast with the aesthetic of the room and create dynamism. Peti uses the color tones and lines to her advantage, maintaining the overall classic, creative aesthetic that this house always had, while simultaneously adding a much more modern and up-to-date look to this living room. Moving on to the dining room, the tone is darker than the rest of the rooms, which meant Peti had to use a much different method in order to maintain this house’s appeal and achieve the couple’s initial vision for this home. In this room, unlike the other modern rugs Peti used before, the patterns are much more uneven and unpredictable; however, they also make us reminisce about animal patterns, which perfectly match the more nature-focused aesthetic of this room. Peti’s early career was spent in Thailand, Mauritius, Europe, and New York, and she thanks this phenomenal international background for making her able to make much more vivacious aesthetics for her projects through the usage of many unique elements, such as wallpapers, modern rugs, and colors. “Peti is a very brave designer, fearless in terms of mixing influences, patterns and colors in compositions that create amazing experiences.” David Imai The primary bedroom is a great example of how incredible Peti is at perfectly blending comfort, relaxation, and design in a single room, all while going beyond her client’s original expectations. The colors and the wallpaper make this room feel like an extension of the garden outside, and not a room in of itself, which makes the use of modern rugs here more of an element to bring you back down to earth, albeit not in a sudden and brutesque way, but more like a smooth, polite reminder. The room has a high presence of different geometrical shapes, namely in the glass panels and the blankets that lie above the bed, yet it also features a wallpaper that once again reminds one of nature and its beauty. Like the other modern rugs we have seen so far, this rug’s main goal isn’t to be the focus of our attention, but rather, to create contrast and add personality to the room, using its light cream colors as well as geometric shapes that remind us of the glass panels. This entry foyer, although it also includes a botanical wallpaper that once again reminds us of nature, is mainly focused on keeping the house’s classic, educated roots in touch with modern times by combining classical furniture with modern elements, such as the flooring and the vase. The modern rugs we see in this picture differ immensely from one another, since the one in the entry foyer is there to maintain a modern touch to the piano, to make sure the room doesn’t seem too old-fashioned, unlike the one in the dining room. After her work was done with this project, the house looked like something that the clients had envisioned: Something new and exciting, that still maintained the very things that made it unique in the first place.
